Welcome to the OABG Daily Blog and Podcast!
You know what I realized this morning when God got me up at 4 a.m. again? That He has so much MORE for me. If I go to bed on time and get adequate rest, I have no issue with getting up super early. Plus there is something about knowing it’s God waking you up. When pursuing Him is your priority, then getting on up out of the bed is not a problem. On the contrary, I am actually excited to worship Him and have a conversation with Him. I learn so much when I get on up.
This morning I was reminded of how much more of my assignments I can accomplish when I wake up early. That season of sleeping late and rushing is over for me. I got things done during that season, but it definitely wasn’t ideal nor was it sustainable. I love how I feel after I have gotten up and gotten moving WITH GOD. Starting your day off in prayer and in pursuit of His Words transforms your life.
As I was reading Proverbs chapter 4 for the Scriptural Bible Study, I learned so much wisdom from God. I see now that Proverbs is really one of those books of the Bible that simply teaches you. It’s not even complex teaching either. My favorite verse from chapter 4 is verse 23: Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life. And when you look at other translations, you realize that it’s not your actual pumping heart, it’s your mind. The Contemporary English Version says it this way: Carefully guard your thoughts, because they are the source of true life. Several different translations break it down, but the Good News Translation makes it plain: Be careful how you think; you life is shaped by your thoughts.
So what are you thinking about? What things do you think on? Your life is shaped by whatever it is you’re thinking. There is another scripture in the Bible, Philippians 4:8-9 that talks about the things we should be thinking on:
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy. 9 Keep to the script: whatever you learned and received and heard and saw in me—do it—and the God of peace will walk with you. Philippians 4:8-9 The Voice
As a side note: I am really loving this VOICE translation lately by the way. It speaks to me very clearly. But we need to PAY ATTENTION to what we think about. Here’s what else the Lord talked to me about through reading His Word this morning:
Your heart must hold on to my Words and keep My commands as you live.
Get wisdom. Get understanding. And make sure you don’t forget it once you get it. Don’t turn away from the Words of My mouth.
When you accept My Word, you will live many more years.
I will guide you on straight paths.
Pay attention to My Words and listen closely to My Sayings. Don’t lose sight of them (that means keep your eyes in My Word).
Keep My Words within your heart.
My Words are life and health.
Be sure to watch which way you go. Carefully consider the path of your feet and all your ways will be established.
As a parent, you are to be the dominant moral influencer and instructor of your children.
You must earnestly pursue wisdom if you want the rest of your life to be the best of your life.
Accepting godly wisdom from your parents can help you live longer.
Notice the repetitiveness of me saying Pay Attention. That’s intentional. I want you to always be paying attention to My Words and My Way.
As I was reading through this and hearing God speak through His Word, I did notice how many times Solomon said, pay attention, in the text. In the study notes, Dr. Evans points out that we as parents should accept that instructing our kids is not a one-time thing, but an on-going responsibility. I was like hmmm, that’s the same with our Father God. He is always speaking to us and instruction us. He just told me in the last blog post that it’s never a one-time application of His Word, it’s ongoing. If we as parents are to always be giving our kids instructions, as sons and daughters of Abba Father, then we can expect to always be getting instructions from Him.
I looked back over chapter 3, which I did something a little different and actually listened to the audio on my Bible YouVersion app. It has one of my favorite verses in Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways KNOW HIM, and He will make your paths straight.
My goal is to please God in all I do. I am to KNOW GOD in all my ways by prayerfully reading and studying His Word. And when I rely on God (not myself) in all I do, He will make my paths straight. I will learn wisdom from God and I will learn understanding from God.
