Welcome to the OABG Daily Blog and Podcast!
Let’s just start over. Have you ever felt like that? You just wanted to start the day over, the year over, the month over, the relationship over, the job over, the weight loss goal over, the business over, the book over (the one you’re writing or the one you’re reading), the marriage over, the parenting over?
While we can’t technically start these things over, what we can BEGIN something that will impact all of those things, and that’s fearing the Lord. Proverbs 1:7 says: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. See if we want to hit the restart button, it starts with fearing the Lord. And what exactly does that mean because I think some people have taken fear of the Lord to mean be scared of Him. But this is the same Lord who tells us to not to be afraid, so that can’t be right. Fear of the Lord means to take Him seriously. Proverbs teaches us that all true wisdom and knowledge is rooted in God and His Word, and it urges us to cultivate a fear of God through a relationship with Him. That means we respect God. We obey God. We live in obedient devotion to God. We START with God.
As we delve into a new book of the Bible for the Scriptural Bible Study, let us start with God. What we gain from studying Proverbs all hinges on us starting with God. It’s the first step in learning and gaining knowledge. The Bible says in that same verse 7 that only stubborn fools, despise wisdom and instruction. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be nobody’s fool, not even my own.
In this first chapter of Proverbs, the parents get first dibs on wisdom. In verses 8-9 it shows us parents that we have the ultimate responsibility to teach our children to know God, to see the world from His perspective, and to live according to His agenda. Our children have the responsibility to listen. We all know that children soak up whatever they see their parents do, right? The question is, do we know God enough to teach our children Are we seeing the world from God’s perspective so we can give our children that same view. And the big one…are we living according to God’s agenda?
I realize now as a mother that parenting is only a chore when I am off track for my responsibility as a parent. Instruction on how to be wise begins at my house and if I am too busy doing other things outside of God’s agenda, most likely I am parenting foolishly. Now I know, that’s kind of harsh, but let’s keep it all the way real, otherwise we won’t be growing in wisdom.
In verse 10 it says: My son, if sinners entice you, don’t be persuaded. Now this is still talking about parenting, but really this message is for all of us. None of us should let sinners entice us. Don’t be persuaded to run with folks that you know ain’t running with the Lord. We big time justify why we hang with people and I have gotten to the point in my spiritual walk that I just ain’t gonna be a fool no more. I am not going to hang with anyone that tries to entice me to sin. And as I am saying that, I realize how easy it is to get tangled up because the devil is so slick in his tactics. But we are reading the book of Proverbs and we are getting wiser by the verse, right?
One of the ways that we can avoid being persuaded is to quiet the competing voices in our lives. We have to block out all the noise of the world, and it’s a noisy one too now especially with social media. But in order to hear God clearly, you got to block those other voices out. How do you do that? Reading your Bible and filling your eyes and ears with His Word. But remember we are to not just read the Word of God, we MUST apply its truths to our lives. We can start living our lives in the abundance Christ died to secure when we apply His Word.
One thing Dr. Evans points out in the study bible notes is this: There are only two answers to any issue: God’s answer and everybody else’s. And everybody else’s is wrong! That’s a straight mic drop message right there. If it ain’t God’s way, it ain’t no way. Period.
As I was beginning to the write this blog and before recording the podcast, the Holy Spirit gave me some wise instructions. He said: follow through with what you already have been assigned. Don’t assign your self any tasks, just do the tasks I have given you. I know you want to rush things along, but remember you are trusting my timing. It’s a wise thing to do because I know what’s going on now and what’s ahead. There is an appointed time. Focus on Me. Focus on prayer. Focus on your assignments. Create a schedule for all the new things you are studying. Remember what you heard Dr. Myles Munroe say: what you don’t manage you will lose. Be wise and listen to that. Fon, just take everything at my pace. My pace, remember? Not your pace. Don’t get impatient with My Pace at this point. Trust Me.
I would be foolish to not listen to the voice of God speaking to me…and so would you. Be encouraged to block out the other voices in your head and hone in on the voice of God.
