Milk or Solids?

I remember when my daughter was born at 10 pounds, 4 ounces, she was eating all the time. As a proud mom who breastfed, I felt like I couldn’t produce enough milk for her appetite. But the more she ate, the more I produced. There was always enough milk for her. I remember when she transitioned from milk to cereal. At first, we would put a little bit of the cereal powder in her bottle just to start her off. She would stay fuller longer and of course that was good for me since I was the primary milk source. My daughter eventually began eating solid foods on the regular because as she grew, milk alone was no longer sustainable for her needs.

That’s the exact message I got today from reading Hebrews 5 for the Scriptural Bible Study! Am I still trying to sustain myself on the milk of God’s Word or have I moved on to the solid foods of God’s Word.

Milk = content of God’s Word. It’s the ABC’s and 123’s. Knowing this is definitely necessary and foundational.

Solid Food = Building on the foundation. This is like adding some cereal to the baby’s milk and then eventually just eating solid foods and no more milk. This is spiritual application and USE of God’s Word in your life.

In Hebrews 5, we learn that at a certain point in our lives as believers, we are supposed to grow up. There is so much that God wants to do with us, in us, and through us, but if we haven’t taken the responsibility of development seriously, then he can’t feed us steak when we are still drinking Similac.

Dr. Tony Evans Hope Words: God wants to develop our maturity before bringing us into our destiny.

Could it be your appetite for the word or lack thereof that’s keeping you from progressing in life? You get one meal a week (not if you listen to the podcast of course), and expect to live off of that. Life is not sustainable that way at all. We can’t be lazy and refuse to grow spiritually.

How can you tell if you’re developing spiritually? When you can tell the difference between good and evil. And even further than that, when you internalize God’s Word and put it into practice. Jesus arrived at the full stature of his maturity. And we are all to follow Jesus!

I was listening to Dr. Myles Munroe recently and he talked about how cows have two stomachs. They consume all the food and then later on bring it back up to chew on it. He said that’s how we ought to be with the Word of God. We should consume it in bulk and then through out the day, just bring it back up and chew on it. This means we aren’t just reading. We are meditating on the Word of God and chewing on it, so we can digest it. Once digested, we are to put God’s Word into practice and apply it to our lives daily.

I love that in this chapter of Hebrews, we continue to see how Jesus relates to us so well because of His human nature. Because He was clothed with weakness, He can deal with us when we are weak. Jesus Christ became our great high priest who endured suffering and remained faithful to God. He is the source of deliverance for all believers who obey Him.

Since becoming a believer in Jesus Christ, how have you been building on the foundation and growing in God’s word daily? Are you still on milk or have you moved on to solid food? Where are you in the spiritual maturation process?

Here’s some scripture for you to do a self-evaluation:

Anyone who lives on milk is still a baby. That person does not want to learn about living a godly life. Solid food is for those who are grown up. They have trained themselves to tell the difference between good and evil. That shows they have grown up. Hebrews 5:13-14 NIRV

Be encouraged today to build on your foundation of God’s Word so that you can GROW UP SPIRITUALLY and be all who God created you to be.

SALVATION PRAYER

If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and you’re not a believer, but you have a desire to be, all you have to do is openly confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9). When you pray that prayer, you are saved. Get connected with a good, bible-based church in your community, stay connected to other believers, and start having daily conversations through prayer with God every single day. Welcome to your new life with Jesus Christ!!!
