WDJD

Do y’all remember those bracelets from long time ago that had the letters WWJD on them? The letters stood for: What Would Jesus Do? It was like a really big trend for a while and it seemed like everyone had them. They came in all different colors and everything. I looked up who came up with these bracelets and thanks to Google here’s what I found:

A youth group leader at Calvary Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan, named Janie Tinklenberg, began a grassroots movement to help the teenagers in her group remember the phrase; it spread worldwide in the 1990s among Christian youth, who wore bracelets bearing the initials WWJD.

As I was praying this morning, Holy Spirit impressed an editorial correction upon my heart. WDJD. What Did Jesus Do?

I kept praying and the Holy Spirit was dropping all kinds of gems and specifics. He even told me what to do as a trade stocks today. I had been praying for that because a few of my other friends who I trade with always hear from God about what stocks to trade. The get specific numbers from God and everything. I know from reading my Bible that God doesn’t show show favoritism so I asked the Lord to tell me specifics in the stock market too and He did. I wrote down what He said. I know He is stretching me to hear Him more in that area.

So I wrote that stuff down and then I wrote down the WDJD: What Did Jesus Do.

I opened my Bible randomly (we know it’s never really random with Holy Spirit), and I landed on John 17! Yes! Have you read John 17? If not, let that be part of your assignment today to read it in its entirety. But I was so in awe of Holy Spirit giving me an immediate answer to the question WDJD right there on the page in John 17.

  • Jesus prayed for Himself.

  • Jesus prayed for His disciples.

  • Jesus prayed for all believers.

What Did Jesus Do? Jesus prayed! But not only that, according to John 17:4, Jesus glorified God on earth by completing the work God gave Him to do. Are we glorifying God by completing the work we were given to do?

One of the common purposes that we all have as believers in Jesus Christ is to proclaim the gospel and pursue God’s kingdom agenda. We all have this goal and in order to be effective, we all must do this in unity. We can’t be divided if we want to be effective. Jesus sent His disciples into the world to make Him known in culture. Are we making Jesus known in culture?

If you don’t read anything else today, read John 17. It was so encouraging this morning to see in Scripture, what Jesus did.

According to John 3:16 God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son Jesus, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

In John 17:3, it says: this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent— Jesus Christ.

A few other scriptures that stood out to me were verses 8-11 where Jesus was praying for His disciples:

8 Because I have given them the words you have given me. They have received them and have known FOR CERTAIN that I came from you. They have believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me, because they are yours. 10 Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. — John 17:8-11

We are protected by the name of Jesus!!! Hallelujah!

In verses 15-17, Jesus prayed for His disciples to be protected from the evil one. He prayed that God would sanctify them by the truth. It says in verse 17 that God’s Word is truth.

To be sanctified means to be set apart for God’s purposes. So that means that if He was praying this prayer for His disciples, that prayer was for us too.

When I read the study notes for this verse, Dr. Tony Evans provided a revelation that helped me and I pray it helps you too, He said to be set apart for God’s purpose is a process by which we internalize the eternal truth of God’s Word. Think of the Word like food. You can chew it all day, but unless you swallow it, you receive no healthy benefits from it.

I thought about gum. We sometimes treat the Word of God like gum. We want to chew on the Word when it’s sweet. You know how it is when you first put a stick of gum in your mouth. It’s so good, right? But then we end up spitting it out because it’s not fresh anymore. Isn’t that how we are? The Word be good on Sunday, but then we don’t chew on it after Sunday because it ain’t as fresh on our minds!!!! Yikes!

Here’s the thing. The Word definitely ain’t gum! It’s meat (well plant-based meat for me), but it’s rich in nutrients and it is for digesting. It is what we need to eat to sustain us. We internalize God’s Word not by merely hearing it or reading it, but by trusting the Word and obeying the Word. That’s when it’s work of spiritual transformation happens in our lives. I am living proof of that. I was in church my whole life, treating the Word like gum. My spiritual transformation didn’t happen until I trusted the Word and obeyed the Word!!

SALVATION PRAYER

If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and you’re not a believer, but you have a desire to be, all you have to do is openly confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9). When you pray that prayer, you are saved. Get connected with a good, bible-based church in your community, stay connected to other believers, and start having daily conversations through prayer with God every single day. Welcome to your new life with Jesus Christ!!!
